La Centrale is a feminist artist-run centre mandated to support projects and artists that are underrepresented in dominant cultural institutions. La Centrale is currently in a process of organizational reflexivity, implementing actions to address existing dynamics of power and privilege and to ensure the intersectionality and social justice aims expressed in its mandate are reflected, embodied, promoted, and defended in its structures, policies, and daily functioning. This includes moving the organization to a physically accessible gallery and office space and the hiring of an Equity Officer to implement the organization's diversity, equity, and inclusion program.


Working in consultation with the board of directors, staff, and members, the Equity Program Officer will using the Centre’s  recent equity audit report to lead the organization in the development and implementations of  diversity, equity and inclusion strategies:

  • Develop a publicly accessible, written equity / anti-violence statement;
  • Write an equity policy;
  • Revise the Centre’s by-laws to address equity and inclusivity at all levels of functioning: staff, membership, and board of directors;
  • Revise the HR policy, in particular as it relates to discrimination, harassment, and conflict to ensure the safety and accountability of staff, members, and the board of directors;
  • Support the design, development, and delivery of learning programs around concepts such as privilege, cultural appropriation, decolonization, and oppression;
  • Support the evaluation of equity initiatives to ensure objectives are met;
  • Participate in various working groups and committees with the goal of fostering, establishing and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-oppressive values to all spheres of the Centre’s activities;
  • Design a hiring and board recruitment strategy that fosters inclusivity, diversity, and equity;
  • Promote a culture of equity and anti-racism at the Centre and the the artist-run centre milieu more broadly through sensitization, tools, activities, and events;
  • Provide front-line listening and advice to workers and members on issues of equity and make recommendations to the board as required;
  • Keeps abreast of legislative amendments, and equity and diversity trends to provide appropriate and current advice to all levels of staff and board of directors to ensure organization-wide training is relevant, applicable and available;

Key Qualifications:

  • A post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate in a Human Resources / Equity related discipline, or a clearly demonstrated equivalent work-related experience;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent skills and experience in interpersonal, communications and, problem-solving skills, sound judgment and sensitivity,
  • Broad understanding and an inclusive approach to building consensus, solving problems and relationship building;
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport with various stakeholders, motivate people, diffuse escalating situations and put people at ease;
  • Experience handling contentious issues with sensitivity, confidentiality and discretion;
  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of restorative justice or/and transformative justice or/and community accountability models of dialogue;
  • Experience developing equity, inclusion, Indigenous cultural competency programs
  • Experience in producing clear, concise and timely notes and reports
  • Ability to work in a bilingual French-speaking work environment with strong writing skills in English or French. Additional language is an asset.

Working time and hourly rate: 16h/week, 25,00$/h, for six months
