La Centrale galerie Powerhouse is looking for an artist able to take up the challenge of developing and implementing communications strategies, as well as the organization of archives.

La Centrale galerie Powerhouse is a feminist artist-run centre whose mandate is to support under-represented projects and artists in dominant cultural institutions. La Centrale is currently undergoing a process of reflection with regards to its organizational structure. One of the first artist-run centres in Canada, La Centrale is a non-hierarchical organization in its operation. Members play a key role in decision-making and programming. Devoted to exhibition/circulation and creation, the centre offers a major place for experimentation.

Driven by a respect for the profound values that constitute feminisms, intersectionality and social justice, La Centrale galerie Powerhouse is looking for an artist able to take up the challenge of developing and implementing communications strategies, as well as the organization of archives.

Working in consultation with the Board of Directors, staff and members, the Communications, Cultural Mediation and Archival Coordinator will be responsible for developing and executing the communications strategy, ensuring the communication and visibility of current events of the gallery and of its members; organizing the archiving and effective management of La Centrale's documentation; developing partnerships in connection to the centre’s activities, and ensure fairness in the committees for which she/he will be responsible as well as in all spheres relating to her position and to La Centrale.

Main tasks:

Communications (17 hours per week)
● Develop communication plan and media strategy
● Participate in the graphic design of La Centrale’s visual identity and its events
● Conceptualize and/or design external communication documents (pamphlets, leaflets, press releases)
● Draft newsletters and members’ bulletins
● Manage website and social media platforms
● Ensure follow up with the media (in collaboration with the coordinator)
● Ensure the link between the centre and the communications committee

Documentation and archiving (3 hours per week)
● Produce filmed interviews with artists
● Photograph exhibitions and events
● Archive visual material
● Ensure archival shipments to Concordia University
● Support the radio committee (in collaboration with the coordinator of that committee)


Cultural Mediation (4 hours per week)
● Ensure the link between the centre and the educational action committee
● Develop public programming related to exhibitions (conferences, workshops, visits, discussions with the artist, etc)


Communal Tasks (4 hours per week)
● Greet public, answer phone
● Assist in preparation for openings
● Assist in preparation of general meetings
● Participate in the drafting of the annual report
● Participate in the development of major orientations and review of grant application files
● Evaluate the centre’s activities
● Participate in the maintenance of offices and common areas
● Any other related tasks

Professional requirements and specific skills
● Established practice in an artistic discipline (visual arts or performance art an asset)
● Knowledge of Montreal’s artistic and cultural milieu
● Experience in community work and NPOs
● Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or public relations ou une expérience similaire
● Training or previous experience in archiving
● Minimum of 3 to 5 years professional experience communication (an experience in marketing is an asset)
● Excellent speaking and writing skills
● Expertise in digital communications tools and social media platforms
● Expertise of IT tools (Office Suite), ease with a Mac environment
● Bilingualism: fluent in written and spoken French and English
● Experience working in cultural/artistic/event milieus (an asset)
● Knowledge of operations of artist-run centres (an asset)
● Experience in crisis communication (an asset)

Conditions of the Position
● Start date: between April 26 and May 8, 2019
● Flexibility around occasionally working evenings and weekends
● Possibility of telecommuting
