La Centrale galerie Powerhouse is an artist-run centre dedicated to the dissemination and development of multidisciplinary feminist practices. We are committed to supporting artists and artistic practices that are marginalized from dominant cultural institutions, and at various stages of their careers. Our programming is in dialogue with feminisms and supports intersectionality and social justice.

Position Overview: GENERAL CO-DIRECTOR & PROGRAMMING

  • Contract type: Permanent 

  • Start date: June 2023

  • Hours per week: 28 hours

  • Schedule: Flexible work hours, availability on nights and weekends required for special events and gallery sitting. Work will be a hybrid model of work-from-home and on-site

  • Salary: $23.21/hour, with annual increases according to the salary policy in place

  • Benefits: 4 weeks paid vacation during first year of contract (during the centre's winter closure), with additional weeks in second year of contract; generous number of paid sick days; budget for reimbursement of health-related expenses

The position of GENERAL CO-DIRECTOR & PROGRAMMING holds four main areas of responsibility: 

  • Develop and sustain programming initiatives that reflect the centre’s mandate and equity directives

  • Ensuring artists and guests invited to exhibit, perform, or present are pleased with their experience working with the centre

  • Maintaining the gallery and equipment at a standard suitable to artists’ needs

  • Researching prospective programming and partnership opportunities

 

Responsibilities :

Programming

  • Develop the artistic vision of the centre in collaboration with the Programming Committee and the Board of Directors

  • Ensure that funding applications reflect the mandate and artistic vision of the centre and, in collaboration with the General Co-Director & Operations, coordinate and execute multi-year funding applications 

  • Prepare grant reports and the centre's annual report as it relates to programming activities (complete the statistics table on attendance and programming activities)

  • Represent the centre for artistique, exhibition, and performance projects with funders and artistic partners 

  • Coordinate the Programming Committee

  • Participate in selection committees for the exhibition and performance projects

  • Ensure that calls for submissions are developed and circulated in a timely manner, in collaboration with the General Co-Director & Communications and Public Engagement 

  • Coordinate the Equity-Seeking Committee  

  • Coordinate the Laboratory Programming in collaboration with the Equity-Seeking Committee

  • Collect feedback related to programming, conduct post-mortems of programming projects, and collect artist feedback

  • Manage the programming budget in collaboration with the General Co-Director & Operations

  • Plan and coordinate the programming calendar in collaboration with the the Co-Directors, the coordinators, and the Board of Directors 

  • Ensure that the centre is able to support planned programming and projects

 

Artistic Support 

  • Write exhibition and contracts and ensure follow-ups 

  • Ensure that the annual CARFAC fee schedule is followed

  • Manage the logistics of exhibition and performance projects, including: residencies and performance evenings 

  • Coordinate and see through the transport of artworks, accommodation for artists residing outside of the city, and all other necessary preparations 

  • Coordinate exhibition openings and closing events 

  • Coordinate volunteers for gallery sitting and exhibitions openings and closing events 

 

Technical 

  • Manage artist’s technical needs

  • Support the technician during the installation and takedown of exhibitions and performances

  • Hire and manage technicians 

  • Maintain the centre’s equipment inventory and its technical needs

  • Ensure the proper functioning of the centre’s equipment

  • Secure additional insurance for programming as needed

  • Coordinate volunteers for installation and takedown of exhibitions

 

Gallery

  • Ensure the good condition of gallery equipment and premises  

  • Ensure that the security systems are in place and properly maintained

  • Manage gallery keys 

 

Research and Prospecting 

  • Prospecting and representation for exhibition and performance projects

  • Research opportunities for exhibition projects outside of the gallery, including local and international venues

  • Research funding opportunities for exhibition and performance projects

  • Research opportunities for services and visibility related to programming and coordinate relevant contracts

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Project management experience and ability to coordinate collaborative projects

  • Experience working in a cultural institution or more generally having knowledge of artistic practices

  • Knowledge and awareness of the field of contemporary art

  • Experience in creating artistic programming

  • Ability to manage budgets and timelines 

  • Ability to develop an artistic vision and long-term strategic thinking 

  • Ability to develop and implement long-term programming that meets the centre's mandate

  • Technical competencies (exhibition installation)

 

  • Proven commitment to equity, diversity, intersectionality, and practices of anti-racism and anti-oppression

  • Ability to approach complex issues raised by the concerns of interdisciplinary feminism, anti-racism, and anti-oppression with care and nuance

  • Ability to work collaboratively while managing and nurturing La Centrale's values and mandate

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to work between administrative and creative tasks

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a small non-hierarchical team

  • Ability to work independently and hold oneself accountable to responsibilities and deadlines

  • Ability to manage stressful situations and to be patient and flexible 

  • Capacity for problem solving and resourcefulness

  • Willingness to ask for help when needed

Fluency in French and English (verbal and written) is required, knowledge of a language other than French or English is a plus
