Resources for Amplifying Indigenous Voices
The discovery of the remains of the 215 young victims of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia has shocked many of us. While the Kamloops Residential School closed in 1978 and the last residential school closed in 1996, this most recent discovery cannot simply be relegated as a part of Canada’s history. The damage and devastation of colonial policies and residential schools is not history, it is part of an ongoing legacy of settler colonialism and genocide that exists in Canada to this day. As Joanne Hammond (@KamloopsArchaeo) has put it: "It's a living trauma ". It is the duty of non-indigenous people and institutions to deconstruct the mechanisms generated by colonization and the culture of white supremacy from which they benefit by living in Canada.
