As part of the DémART-Mtl program, la Centrale galerie Powerhouse presents Voices of the Archives, curated by Karina Arbelaez Saenz. In this exhibition, sound and video bear witness to the work of underrepresented female and non-binary artists. After a careful study of the gallery’s archives, personal observations and experiments at La Centrale, Arbelaez Saenz instigates a discussion about different historical moments at the center.
Voices of the Archives features a selection of works (1974-2017) that addresses cultural and social concerns relevant to the current context at La Centrale: equity, immigration and intersectionality. The project aims to put forward it’s own voice, while allowing visitors to discover the different ways in which artists’ words can manifest themselves.
A native of Colombia, Karina Arbelaez Saenz lives and works in Montreal. She completed a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts at the National University of Colombia. In parallel to studying French and English, she is currently resuming her artistic practice thanks to the DémART-Mtl program funded by the Montreal Arts Council.
