It is with great pride that La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse announces the 3 candidates in the run for this first edition of the PRIX POWERHOUSE prize, which will be given during a "6 to 8" event, on Wednesday June 29th, 2011.
The 3 finalists are :
The PRIX POWERHOUSE is a 5000$ award celebrating women* artists who, having reached or passed the mid-stage in their career, continue to contribute in a significant and sustained way to the cultural life of Montréal. The purpose of the prize is to recognize and honour an individual artist of unique vision who pursues their practice with determination and without compromise. The award is integral to the mandate of La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse, an artist-run centre committed to providing a platform for practices grounded in feminist discourse, gender theory, cultural diversity and multidisciplinarity.
As a first step and in a desire of openess, each proposed artist had to be nominated by a third party. Then, La Centrale called upon an external jury to make the pre-selction of the 3 finalists. This expert jury was composed of : Anne Bertrand (artistic coordinator for the Centre des arts actuels Skol), Valérie Blass (visual artist, past winner of the Prix Graff and Prix Louis-Comtois awards), Monika Kin Gagnon (writer and assistant professor of the communications department of Concordia University), Isa Tousignant (senior editor for enRoute magazine and contributing editor for Canadian Art magazine) and Sarah Watson (curator, part-time instructor of Art History at Concordia University and special projects director of Musée McCord). Concordant with the centre's democratic spirit, the final decision is given back to La Centrale's members and will finally be announced during the prize-giving event.
This event is open to all and will take place on Wednesday, June 29th at La Centrale, between 6 and 8pm, in presence of the jury and the centre's members. This event will honor the work of the 3 finalists and announce the first ever PRIX POWERHOUSE winner.
With the PRIX POWERHOUSE, La Centrale wishes to promote the work of a Montréal artist until now under-represented, by recognizing the vibrancy and uniqueness of an influential practice.
We hope you will be with us to celebrate this important moment of La Centrale's herstory.
La Centrale would like to recognize the generous contribution of an anonymous donor that has made this prize possible.
