La Centrale galerie Powerhouse is seeking new members for our Board of Directors!

Board Position Summary:

La Centrale is an artist-run centre dedicated to the dissemination and development of multidisciplinary feminist practices and is committed to supporting artists who are underrepresented in dominant cultural establishments at different stages of their careers. Its programming dialogues with feminisms and supports intersectionality.

The Board of Directors is the governing body of La Centrale. This volunteer position works in a collaborative and feminist environment to oversee the organization and provide support to La Centrale’s coordinating team. We are seeking up to 2 new Directors who support La Centrale’s mission and vision to commit to a one-year term.

La Centrale galerie Powerhouse has ambitious projects planned for the next few years, including the launch of an online programming platform, a relocation project, and the hiring of new staff. We are excited to welcome new members to our Board to help lead the gallery into the future.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and oversight to La Centrale’s mission and vision

  • Attend quarterly board meetings, approximately 2-3 hours each

  • Provide occasional support to coordinating team between meetings on an as needed basis

  • Attend Annual General Meeting in the Fall

  • Option to serve on one or more committees (HR, Fundraising, programing, communication etc.)

Expertise/Interests La Centrale is Seeking:

  • Governing artist-run centers and/or not-for-profit charitable organizations

  • Knowledge about non-hierarchical structures

  • Strategic planning*

  • Equity and diversity governance and planning*

  • Human resources and legal*

  • Finance/accounting

  • Fundraising, Development, Grass-Roots Organizing

  • Audience and community development

*Individuals with these skill sets are of particular need for the board in the coming term

These expertise/interests represent a sample of relevant skills and experience. Candidates may possess qualifications that are not included in this list. Please submit the following information in pdf format to before October 17th, 2021:

  • Biography, 100 words maximum

  • CV

  • Brief statement (350 words max.) answering one of the following questions:

    • In your opinion, what are the key components of a healthy and sustainable arts organization?

    • What do you consider to be La Centrale’s biggest opportunities for growth?

    • As a member of the Board, how would integrate intersectional feminist and non-hierarchical values into your work?

Applications submitted before the October 17th deadline will be shared with La Centrale membership ahead of the Annual General Meeting. Interested candidates who do not apply before the deadline, can make a spontaneous candidature during the General Meeting.

2. Attend General Meeting: October 26th, 2021 at 6PM (Zoom)

Elections of the Board members take place at the General Meeting. New Board members are voted on by La Centrale’s membership. Applicants will have the opportunity to present themselves to the membership at the AGM. Both candidates who submitted their application before the October 17th deadline and spontaneous candidates should be prepared to present themselves to La Centrale’s membership.
