In Progress, presented at La Centrale aims to draw attention to layers of meaning within the gallery space by engaging the viewer in an unexpected encounter with objects through a subtle material intervention in the gallery. At first glance the gallery appears to be empty however, on view are three marble electrical heaters, mimicking so closely the existing functioning electrical heaters, lining the baseboards of the gallery. The replicated electrical heaters, expected and familiar visual elements in the space, become inconspicuous and seemingly invisible. As such it brings the exhibition space into question as the work mirrors the site and camouflages its own art object nature, turning the illusion of emptiness and absence into a palpable experience. The experience of absence is located in-between the real and the replicated. The replicated objects are invisible at first glance but this simple action of invisibility questions the authority usually implicit in an art institution context by deemphasizing the art object and calling attention to the gallery itself as a constructed site of power.
Candice Davies (b.1984) holds a BFA from York University, Ontario and a MFA from Concordia University, Quebec. Her art practice draws attention to layers of meaning within the gallery space and questions existing assumptions surrounding the art object by engaging the viewer in an unexpected encounter with objects through subtle material interventions in the gallery space. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada, namely at The Leonard & Bina Ellen Gallery, Parisian Laundry, CIRCA, Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre and an upcoming solo exhibition at TRUCK Contemporary Art.
